Dr Sergei Popov graduated from the Cybernetic faculty of the Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute with additional specialization on Large Energy Systems at the Siberian Energy Institute, Russia, in 1982. He received his PhD in applied mathematics in 1993. Conducting research, he dealt with economic, environmental and policy issues, related to the energy systems development at regional, national and international tiers. He joined the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Center in 2004 and till 2011 he has been participated in the research on energy transformation in the Asia-Pacific Region carried out by this Center.
Since 2011 he is a Head of the International Research Centre “Energy Infrastructure in Asia”, Department of Complex and Regional Problems in Energy, Melentiev Energy Systems Institute, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Irkutsk.
His research interests include energy transformation patterns resulted from holistic assessments of technological, environmental, economic and social factors; East Asian energy infrastructure and energy markets; and international institutions for energy cooperation.
